The Lumens Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing renewable energy education and workforce development in underserved communities, both locally and globally. We believe people are the most essential renewable resource, and we focus on equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in a clean energy future.
Through strong partnerships, we deliver hands-on solar education, workforce training, and life-sustaining practices that address systemic inequities in access to clean energy, education, and economic opportunity. Our programs include community-based trainings, workshops, and practical resources designed to empower individuals—particularly those in urban and historically marginalized neighborhoods—to build resilient, equitable, and sustainable communities.
OUR MISSION
To empower members of our communities immediate and broader to understanding of the critical importance of adopting and implementing sustainable energy solutions in all aspects of life’s disciplines/pursuits.
WHAT WE DO
Our focus is on serving underserved youth in Highland Park, Detroit, and neighboring communities in Michigan by bridging the gap between education and career opportunities in the solar industry. We provide targeted support to reentering individuals and those without a high school diploma or GED through comprehensive solar workforce training, complemented by foundational instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Through strategic partnerships, our programs equip participants with the practical skills, certifications, and industry knowledge needed to secure sustainable employment in the renewable energy sector. By combining hands-on training with career guidance, we aim to increase workforce participation, reduce employment disparities, and create clear pathways to economic opportunity for underserved populations.

OUR CAPACITY AND GROWTH PLAN
At Lumens Foundation, we are committed to empowering youth and young adults by expanding access to workforce development opportunities. We believe that providing practical skills, training, and resources enables individuals to achieve meaningful and sustainable career success,
regardless of their socioeconomic background.​ Our programs prioritize preparing underserved and underrepresented individuals for careers in the growing renewable energy sector, including solar, while incorporating foundational STEM knowledge to enhance learning and career readiness.

Grant funds will support these initiatives by strengthening instructional capacity, delivering hands-on workforce training, and offering career-focused workshops designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in today’s job market.

Our programs are designed to empower underserved and underrepresented populations, giving them the tools, support, and opportunities to shape their futures, pursue sustainable careers, and make a lasting impact.
