The Lumens Foundation is a non-profit that was founded to educate communities within the states and abroad about the benefits of sustainable energy. We believe that people are the most critical renewable resource, and we want to focus on teaching life-sustaining practices through partnerships. We are dedicated to creating solutions to the many disparities that underserved communities face. We will accomplish this through trainings, workshops, and resources given to individuals within urban neighborhoods near and far.
OUR MISSION
To empower members of our communities immediate and broader to understanding of the critical importance of adopting and implementing sustainable energy solutions in all aspects of life’s disciplines/pursuits.
WHAT WE DO
Our focus is to serve the underserved youth of Highland Park and Detroit Michigan, bridge the gap between education and access to solar jobs industry by teaching the reentering population and individuals who have not obtained a HSD or GED solar education as well as education of Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering through partnerships. With the implementation of technology such as smart boards and cameras we will have a means to broaden the scope
and teach individuals virtually.
OUR CAPACITY AND GROWTH PLAN
Promote STEM along with solar education for underserved and underrepresented communities associated with STEM.
Through partnerships provide academic enrichment programs for underserved and underrepresented communities associated with STEM.
Work with other organizations to provide workforce development opportunities for underserved and underrepresented communities associated with STEM.
Provide community and/or civic engagement opportunities for underserved and underrepresented communities associated with STEM.
At The Lumens Foundation we believe in the power of STEM. We recognize that when you give children access to resources and opportunities, they can achieve anything they set their minds to. We also believe that everyone deserves access to those resources and opportunities—whether they're in a low-income neighborhood or not.
The Lumens Foundation will be working to address the needs of underserved and underrepresented communities in STEM and Workforce Development. We plan to use grant funds to support our initiatives in education around sustainability by securing instruction and implementing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through our partnerships along with our course offerings on solar education.
We will also use grant funds to support our initiative in Academic Enrichment by developing a series of hands-on workshops that teach students the skills they need to succeed in the workplace.
The Lumens Foundation's plan of action to address or contribute to social justice causes over the next twelve months is to:
OUR GOAL
Our goal is to create a space where students can explore their passions through hands-on learning activities and projects in areas such as robotics and coding; where they can collaborate with peers on projects that they are passionate about while developing critical thinking skills; where they can learn how to troubleshoot problems when things don't go as planned; where they can develop their own solutions by working together with their peers or teachers; where they can gain confidence by solving challenging problems with support from their peers or teachers; where they can develop social skills
while working together.
